Maya Artisan Markets
Buy local on your Sandos vacation
Searching for authentic local souvenirs on your next trip to Cancun or the Riviera Maya? When you stay at Sandos, you’ll find a Maya artisan market set up on different days of the week so you can purchase regional handicrafts, traditional clothing, handmade jewelry, bags and much more, all while helping the local Maya community. The full amount of every purchase you make goes to the artisans themselves.
The Sandos Foundation works hand-in-hand with local artisans from the Riviera Maya region to create markets where Sandos guests can shop for authentic souvenirs and support the community during their stay at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort, Sandos Playacar Beach Resort, or Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort. These markets are run by artisans from two local groups: a collective of artisans from the nearby town of Puerto Morelos, and Xyaat, an organization that promotes the culture and wellbeing of villages in the Zona Maya and Riviera Maya regions.
These Maya artisan markets set up every week at our three Sandos resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. If you’re staying at Sandos Cancun, you can find them by the infinity pool area once a week. At Sandos Playacar, the market takes place along the fountain avenue just outside the Meeting Point two to three times a week. At Sandos Caracol, you’ll spot the market along the main avenue just outside the theater two to three times a week.
During your vacation at Sandos Caracol, you also won’t want to miss our weekly Pueblo Mágico event (Magical Village) every Sunday night! In addition to the Maya artisan market, you’ll also find a full Mexican fiesta with folkloric dances, food stands serving traditional treats, live music and mariachi bands, Mexican games and much more.
Not only does The Sandos Foundation support the local community through these artisan markets, we also make visits to the area’s Maya villages to donate items such as school supplies, toys, clothing and home accessories, all of which have been donated by our guests and Sandos itself.
