Every March, thousands of people travel to the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza to see the shadows in the form of a serpent descend down the staircase of “El Castillo” pyramid. Here, we’ll present the live broadcast of this spectacular event, accompanied by music, traditional Mayan drinks, and a representative from the Mayan community to tell us the significance of this event.

The fall season in the Riviera Maya is filled with festivals and activities, including the Equinox celebrations at Sandos Caracol Eco Experience Resort. During your upcoming vacation, you’ll fall in love with the blend of Mayan traditions and celebrations to honor nature and the environment.

On this day of celebration, we’ll have photography displays and pre-Hispanic instruments, along with film viewings in the hotel’s movie theater so you can learn all about the region’s fascinating Mayan heritage.

November 1 – 2, 2014

In the first days of November, Mexico shines brightly with candlelight and colorful costumes during the famous Day of the Dead. Discover how the country honors loved ones who have passed away through beautiful altars and ancient traditions that celebrate life after death.

On these two days, we have a variety of activities planned so you can have a blast. Take a look and get ready to experience this fascinating celebration!

What would this time of year be without pumpkins? Step up to our pumpkin carving workshop, where you’ll learn how to capture the magic of this celebration.

-Catrina Parade with a Sinaloa Band

The “Catrina” is Mexico’s most intriguing representation of death, and she’s the protagonist of many Day of the Dead celebrations. In this parade, she comes out for a stroll with her friends around Sandos Caracol Eco Experience Resort to show off her colorful and dazzling personality, all set to the rhythm of drums.

This is a fun tradition that has become part of Mexican folklore, often used to criticize the government and politicians, or as a dedication to friends and family. Calaveritas are poems written as if the person had already passed away, and they typically have a sarcastic or ironic tone. You’ll have the opportunity to hear various examples of this fun tradition.

This famous regional story is told with even more intensity during the nights of Day of the Dead because of its chilling roots. For many years, the beautiful Xtabay has created fear among the men of this region because of her charms and unexpected surprises.

-Fire Show
(Saturday, November 1, 8:30 pm)


Witness a Mayan ritual of darkness and fire. Surrounded by the intense heat of the flames, the Shaman gives thanks for everything the Great Creator has given us: the sacred elements of Water, Sun, Wind, Earth and Life. As the villagers dance to the beating of drums, the entire Xcalacoco community unites in a prayer for harmony. In this final ceremony, together we’ll promise to continue feeding the Fire of Life.

-The Legend of “La Llorona” Performance

This bone-chilling legend reveals one of night’s greatest mysteries, where a spectral figure appears and invites us to hear her story. Find out what drove “La Llorona” to live in eternal tragedy and haunting.

-Day of the Dead Altar
(All day)


You’ll have the chance to see one of the most important elements of Day of the Dead celebrations. Our staff (the “Sandistas”) prepares altars as a tribute to their loved ones who have passed away. These traditional altars include marigold flowers (known as “cempasúchil”), “papel picado” (Mexican folk art of colorful cut paper), “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead), candles, water, sugar skulls and objects that were important to the deceased when they were alive.

At this time of year, cemeteries are visited by thousands of people during the day and night so they can spend time by the graves of their family members with music, food and prayers while they light candles to illuminate the way for the souls of the deceased. At Sandos Caracol Eco Experience Resort, you can see the colors of a traditional Mexican cemetery and feel the positive energy shown for loved ones.

Kids Club

We have a variety of activities prepared for the kids so they will love and understand this exciting time of year. With plenty of creativity and laughs, they’ll create different elements that will be used in the event.

-Create Your Own Sugar Skull

We’ll have all the materials the kids will need to use their creativity and decorate their own “calaveritas” (sugar skulls).

-Calaverita Decorating
(12:00 pm)


It’s time for the mischievous kids to make their own basket that they’ll use when they go to ask for “calaverita”, the Mexican version of trick-or-treating. They’ll decorate a gourd to use when they later walk through the resort and ask for treats and surprises.

-Wall of Day of the Dead Drawings
(5:00 pm)


Kids will have the chance to create Day of the Dead drawings and display them for everyone to see… perfect for showing off their artistic talent.

- “Calaverita” (Mexican Trick-or-Treat)

The children in the Kids Club will have a blast walking through the resort, greeting guests and asking them for coins or treats. This is one of the region’s oldest traditions, allowing kids to let loose and have fun year after year. Kids will have the chance to make new friends and experience this trick-or-treat adventure together.

An expo that will take your breath away! We’ll show you Mexican folklore through this exposition that displays the beauty of our customs.
