About Tenerife

Five is a magic number for the Island of Tenerife.

Because five million people come here every year making it the leading destination in the Canary Islands.

And because your five senses are not enough to appreciate everything it has.

What is more, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the only one to have two international airports, which mean that it is no more than between two and four hours flying time from the Spanish mainland and the rest of Europe.

Tenerife has the most authentic carnival; it has the highest peak in Spain – the breathtaking Mount Teide, of 3,718 metres (12,200 ft)-; and the annual average temperature is 22 degrees. That is why, December and August are closer here than anywhere else.

Places of Interest

On the Island, you will be lucky enough to find unique locations. A 17-kilometre volcanic tube, the longest in Europe; or Mount Teide National Park (declared a World Heritage Site in 2007), a magical spot which each year receives more visits than any other National Park in Spain: over three million.

Apart from its natural treasures, Tenerife has many other spots to offer that are as special and as beautiful as the Island itself. Such is the case of La Laguna, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco; the Lago Martiánez swimming pool complex, designed by the artist, César Manrique; or natural spaces such as Teno Rural Park or the Anaga Massif.

El Medano

El Médano Beach is in the district of Granadilla de Abona, next to the small seaside resort of the same name. It is the longest beach on the island, a two-kilometre stretch of fine golden sand that ends at a volcanic cone called "Montaña Rojo" (Red Mountain). The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve due to its important ecological value.

The beach has a range of facilities and a very pleasant seafront walk to stroll along.

Historic Centre of La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Cultural and Heritage Site by Unesco, has maintained its highly valued historic centre in an exemplary state of conservation. As well as important monuments and historic buildings, there is an important centre of commercial activity, offering the chance to buy souvenirs to remember your visit to the island: fashion, Tenerife wines, Canarian craftwork and typical gastronomical products. The city has an important university tradition, thus providing the liveliness and relaxed atmosphere of its countless tascas.

Teide National Park

The highest peak in Spain (3,718 metres), declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, is an absolute must. Beautiful and grandiose, it will make you feel very small.

A network of national parks in the Canary Islands attempts to conserve their most characteristic ecosystems. Hence, the Mt. Teide National Park, in the centre of the island of Tenerife, shelters the best examples of the supra-Mediterranean vegetation level. On the other hand, with an average altitude of over 2,000 metres, the Mt. Teide National Park offers one of the most spectacular examples of vulcanism in the world and represents the best example of alpine volcanic ecosystem in the Canary Islands

From a geo-morphological point of view, the structure of the caldera and the Teide-Pico Viejo strato-volcano are among the most spectacular geological monuments in the world, apart from the wide variety of volcanic cones and domes, lava flows, tors and caves that form a range of colours and forms that increase the scientific and scenic interest of the area. With regard to the enormous biological wealth of the area, the outstanding flora includes a large percentage of endemic species and the invertebrate fauna a large number of exclusive species. This National Park, created in 1954 in recognition of its volcanic and biological singularity, is the largest and the oldest of the National Parks of the Canary Islands, covering an area of 18,990 hectares, and the fifth largest of the thirteen National Parks in the network. Apart from its Peripheral Protection Zone, this natural area is surrounded by the Corona Forestal Nature Park, the largest protected natural area of the Canary Islands with 46,612.9 hectares. In 1989, it was awarded a class A European Diploma by the Council of Europe. This European Diploma was extended in 1994 and in 1999. The Teide National Park Board and the Joint Canary Island National Parks Commission held several meeting in 2002 to have the Mt. Teide National Park declared a World Heritage Site. As a result of this initiative the Teide National Park was declared as World Heritage Site in summer 2007.

Practical advice

What to pack?

Baring in mind that the average temperature in Tenerife is 23 degrees centigrade and that we have 300 days of sunshine, we recommend you bring beachwear and sun protection, comfy cotton clothing for the summer and a cardigan or light jacket for the winter depending on the altitude of the areas you visit. The island of Tenerife has a very stable climate. Its orography and the influence of the trade winds produce microclimates, which can make for varied temperatures between very short distances, something to bare in mind when travelling around the island.

Medical Care

During your holidays, all residents of the European Union have the right to free medical and hospital care from Tenerife's Public Health Service. To receive this medical care you need to have the European Medical Card or equivalent document, which can be applied for in your home country. Residents in Spain require the "tarjeta sanitaria" of their autonomous region.  The European Medical Card does not cover all treatments

Time Zone

In Tenerife, as in the rest of the Canary Islands, the time zone is the same as GMT. Even in summer clocks here are moved forward an hour. This means that the time is the same as in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Ireland and an hour less than the rest of Spain and countries such as Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Sweden.

VAT Refunds

In Tenerife, as in the rest of the Canary Islands, there is no VAT so you cannot apply for a refund. This fiscal difference with the rest of the European Union results in cheaper and more attractive prices for many items because they are taxed at a much lower rate than in Europe. However, you should bear in mind the maximum duty-free allowance that you can take home with you from the island.
